Networking issues with file shares on OSX 10.4

Hi All,

I think I can call this a Network issue, so am posting it here.

We have an application that remotely controls another (someone elses) application using a combination of sockets and files (using a remote mount - so it's a 'network issue'). Our application works on both Macs and Windows. We have a major problem it seems when we use our Windows application to control the Mac. The socket control part of it works fine, but not the file control part. What we do is quite simple - (on Windows) we want to create a folder on the Mac (across the network) which has read/write permissions for User/Group/Others. That's it!!

What our Windows code does is use the CreateDirectory Windows API call, passing in a security descriptor which contains ACLs.

If we use an ACL just containing the Authenticed Users Group ACE, whatever we do we get Read&Write/Read/Read permissions for User/Group/Others. Not good enough.

If we use an ACL that contains the Authenticed Users Group and Everyone ACE, it gets worse (on the Mac - on Windows it works fine)!! In that case the first Authenticed Users Group ACE seems to get ignored, it just applies (or overwrites it with the) Everyone ACE and we end up with None/None/Read&Write permissions for User/Group/Others. In that case even I as the person who created the folder can't do anything with it!!

This is so simple, I can't believe it doesn't work. Mac OSX 10.4 doesn't seem to properly honour the ACLs in a security descriptor when folders are created across the Network.

This is so simple, I would think/hope that someone can help!!

Help Please.

Thanks.

Andy.
