Weird error using gethostbyname

| Hi,
I've been making a cocoa application connects to a host on a specific port. Both arguments, including others, are passed to the program through NSTextField's.
What I find weird is that when I feed gethostbyname() with a host that doesn't exist (the domain does, however) I get:
gethostbyname: Invalid argument
Why don't I get "Unknown host" or so?
