Is this an open source app? I'm trying to create an

The app, AFAIK, is not open source. I am not even sure that the functionality invoked by each of the tabs is open source, but there are open source equivalents. All the below, except for nmap, are available on the darwin site.

   Info - ifconfig/netstat
   Netstat - netstat
   AppleTalk - appletalk
   Ping - ping
   Lookup - nslookup/dig
   Traceroute - traceroute
   Whois - whois
   Finger - finger
   Port Scan - nmap

For nmap, check <http://www.insecure.org>.

If not, here are a couple of questions:
- can the entire network (TCP/IP) stack be restarted?
ie, stop and restarted?

What do you mean by "restart", and why do you want to do that?

The Darwin/BSD stack really doesn't have that kind of functionality, for almost any definition (short of restart == reboot).

- I have a couple of examples to get the MAC address
for each interface, how can the IP address be
retreived? What happen if it is DHCP assigned?
(just use sysctrl to get the info, ie like ifconfig?)

"man getifaddrs". Also, searching the archives couldn't hurt. It will often get you started more quickly.

And, since you ask, the notion of "the IP address" is ill-defined.

Regards,

Justin
