Does loopback work with any other apps such as ftp or ssh?

Apologies if this is not the correct list for this but I'm hoping some of the network gurus
might be able to shed some light on this. Please let me know if there is a more

What would cause an application to not be able to connect to a server application running
on itself assuming the server is running and the network interface is up?

We've had a few reports from people using our application of an error when
trying to connect to the database: Unable to connect to 127.0.0.1.

One thing of interest is in the console log where there are a number of lines like:

Client-Computer lookupd[63]: NetInfo connection failed for server 127.0.0.1/local
Client-Computer lookupd[63]: ni_statistics: Communication failure

A quick google appears to suggest a corruption to the NetInfo database. Is this the
most likely culprit? Any idea as to what would cause this?

This is on a G4 running 10.4.4.
