Thanks everyone for all your help.
It turns out when our test equipment was generating a multicast MAC
address from the multicast IP address it was using the lower 24 bits of
the IP address rather than the lower 23 bits. Therefore the multicast
MAC address generated was wrong and therefore my Ethernet adapter was
filtering out the packets!
It's the littlest thing that is always so difficult to diagnose! Its
nice to know it wasn't anything I'd done or that apple had done.
