Hey Everyone
Greeting from your friendly MacNetworkProg list administrator. Wow,
it's been a long time since I posted a copy of this (four years by my
counting). That's probably a good thing (-:
I'm going to start with a reminder that Apple mailing lists have a
set of formal Terms and Conditions, and I recommend that folks read
them before posting.
<http://lists.apple.com/tc.html>
I specifically want to call out he following:
If you are using one of our mailing lists and see something you feel
is inappropriate, please report it to the administrator of the list,
or to email@hidden. Do not attempt to deal with the
problem yourself. Only the list administrators have the authority to
set policy on the mailing lists. Individual users may find they may
actually get in trouble for "trying to help". Please help by
following the rules, not by trying to define them.

Next, as a long-term contributor to this mailing list, I thought it
might be helpful if I explained the sorts of questions that I answer
and why. This isn't formal list policy, just my own personal take on
things. Basically, it goes like this:
o If it's a user-level question, I'll most probably ignore it. This
is a programmer's mailing list and discussion should be limited
to programming IMO. For user-level help, there are plenty of other
resources out on the web, including the following Apple-sponsored
discussion group.
<http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=733>
o If I know the answer, I'll answer your question straightaway.
o If the answer is easy to find, I'll find it and then post it.
o If one of the Apple engineers lurking on the list sends me the
answer, I'll forward it on.
o If it's a tough question, I won't spend a lot of time researching it.
Unfortunately I have only a limited number of cycles to spend on
mailing list work. My real job is answering people who pay DTS
for the privilege.
o If I don't know the answer, I'll keep quiet.
o If you continue a mailing list discussion by replying to my Apple
email address, be prepared for me to post the response to the entire
list. If the discussion must be confidential, let me know in your
email.
If you don't hear an answer from me here, you might trying forwarding
your question to DTS
<http://developer.apple.com/technicalsupport/index.html> and I'll try
to answer it on company time.

Finally, here are some hints for getting a good response:
o Please restrict your posts to a single topic. While it may seem
like an optimisation to bundle all your questions together, it
just makes the threads harder to follow.
o Try to include all relevant information in your first post.
Information like your target OS, the frameworks you're using,
your development environment, the steps you've already taken
to fix the problem, console messages, backtraces, CrashReport
logs, and so on, can all be helpful.
o Before posting to the list, go to <http://developer.apple.com>
and enter your question into the search box. You'll be amazed
at how often that will find the right answer, or a useful lead.
Share and Enjoy
