My question is what needs to be "configured" for each service? Is
DHCP derived settings not sufficient?
The DHCP-based configuration should work for most people and there's
generally few reasons why you can't have Ethernet, Wireless, and USB
enabled in the same location at the same time. As you should know,
there's no problem if you have one interface "configured" but not
used
and if/when you have multiple interfaces hooked up at the same time
we
tend to favor the interface with the higher performance (e.g.
Ethernet
over wireless). What "settings" do you need to tweak from the
defaults?
Yes a DHCP configuration based configuration is enough and I'm
aware that
it will be only created once you go into the network setting
preference
panel, but I don't want the service held until a user does that,
which is
why I'm looking to pre-create this when I create the network
location, so it
just works when the user plugs in the USB device.
For 10.5.2, we added code to watch for new USB LAN adaptors. When a
new adaptor is plugged in the user will get a notification prompting
them to launch Network Preferences to configuration the new interface.
That should help a bunch.
