If there's no parent/child relationship between the two processes, the only way to create a UNIX domain socket connection between them is by one process creating a listening socket. That requires write access to some part of the file system, no?

I wouldn't have said "write access to the file system", but I get the point. "/tmp/" should always be there (if not, something's way off in the weeds).
