Thank you very much for your reply Quinn. Upon further investigation using a packet sniffer as you suggested, I can see exactly what is occurring, which appears to be a bug in Safari rather than in my web server code as I first thought. Running the packet sniffer on the client computer, I can see that the file is received completely, however Safari pauses right at the end of its download status bar and doesn't "finish off" the file until either of the two connections is closed. This is with the second connection sending data constantly at several MB/s. The problem does not occur with FireFox.
I have confirmed this by testing the same thing with Apache as the server instead of my app. While a large file (several GB) is being downloaded (at 10MB/s), attempting to download a second smaller file (a few MB) at the same time results in the smaller file's download progress bar hanging right at the end until either connection is closed, at which point Safari will finish off the smaller file properly. This is with Safari 3.1.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.4. The two computers are attached to a 100bT local network.
