Changing DNS servers temporarily

  • Subject: Changing DNS servers temporarily

Hi All,

I'm trying to figure out what the best way is to temporarily change DNS servers via a script or C with the least chance of causing problems. I've been playing around with scutil and networksetup and the thoughts I've had so far are:

* the DNS servers should not be overwritten when a DHCP lease renews
* if something else such as a VPN needs to change DNS servers, it should be able to
* it should be easily reverted to the previous DNS servers
* it needs to support 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6

The DNS servers are for general resolution, not for any specific domains.

Does anyone have suggestions as to what the best approach is to take? Any thoughts on other potential problems changing the DNS servers could cause that should be taken into consideration and worked around?

Thanks,

-Dan
