My question wasn't as silly in retrospect as I may have thought. I somehow assumed that Apple would implement things in the "most optimal way".
I'm trying to pump real-time audio via UDP from the iPhone. I'll report how it goes.

For voice-quality monophonic audio (I think this can be scrunched down to 16kbps* or so) you'll be receiving roughly one packet per second. I don't think that's going to strain the CPU of an iPhone :)

* I think I said 32k yesterday, but I forgot this is mono! AAC-LD is probably the best codec for this, and claims to support voice at 16kbps. _______________________________________________
