What is the best way to implement a timeout on a CFReadStream in an iPhone app?

The best way, IMO, is to allow the user to cancel. The problem with timeouts is in the choosing of the value. It can take an awfully long time for some networking operations to complete (especially on an iPhone WWAN interface), and it's annoying if they time out /just/ before you managed to plug the Ethernet cable back into the Wi-Fi base station.

Of course, this obviously isn't feasible in all cases.
