I've tried to look into the TXTRecord but there is simply nothing there. should i Scan for services other than afpovertcp to get machine information ?
NSData *TXTRecordData = [netService TXTRecordData]; NSLog(@"%@",TXTRecordData);
gives me <00>

not for a server to witch you are not connected to.
You need to use the information in the server's Bonjour service's TXT record. You definitely don't want to have to contact every server on the whole network just to find out what icon to display. I don't know specifically how the machine-type information is stored, and it may or may not be documented anywhere, but the TXT record is interpreted as a set of key/value pairs, so it's pretty easy to list those and guess what they mean. —Jens
