3GS .. video .. compression?

I'm uploading video clips, from a 3GS, to an FTP site ..

Having trouble finding how to compress the video before or during sending ...

surely there is some sort of API ?  in the networking realm perhaps?

Any ideas?   THANKS.

(of course obviously the Apple "email" and "YouTube" apps on the 3GS do this beautifully before the networking, as a blessed example)
