Best way to manage G3 network connections from a program ???

I’m getting ready to start working on a project using a G3 wireless connection.  I want to be able to connect/disconnect on demand from a COCOA application.  Before I dig in I figured I would poll this group for any info to help get us started.

We just received an AT&T (Sierra Wireless) USBConnect 881 card for our development, but would like a solution that that could work with any card.  At the 10,000 level we want to check for internet connectivity, start the G3 connection is necessary, then initiate a VPN session back to the corporate network to gain secure access to the application server.  The user’s are currently performing the internet and VPN connection manually and our goal is to automate these connections.

Any pointers from the group would be much appreciated.
