sorry for the delayed response (been travelling).

I'm trying to duplicate the Apple DAAP protocol login HTTP request
which does not include these headers.  It seems if you send them a
DAAP device (like AppleTV) rejects them.

This has been a long standing issue with DAAP. Software that proxies HTTP connections and then changes the HTTP headers has had the same problem since 2002. iTunes in particular is not very forgiving.
