The latter sample code is pretty thorough; unfortunately it's written in a crazy plug-in style that really interferes with the teaching process.

Thanks; I hadn't seen that before. It looks like -[ServerTrustChallengeHandler _evaluateAskPerUntrustedSiteTrust] is the most relevant code for my purposes.

This also does seem to confirm that the reason for getting a server-trust challenge is to allow the *client* to authenticate the *server*, in contrast to the other auth challenge types.
