network-authentication UIBackgroundMode on iOS

I've been looking at implementing some of the CaptiveNetwork support on iOS, and I've come across a couple of shipping App Store apps that seem to be using undocumented OS features, relating to CaptiveNetworks.

Both apps have a UIBackgroundModes entry of network-authentication, and one has an entitlements entry with a key of "com.apple.developer.CaptiveNetworkPlugin", and value true.

I can't find any documentation for these values anywhere. Does anyone know what they relate to?

   cheers,
             m.
