Debugging UDP Multicast communication

I've got an odd problem which I have been able to reproduce on multiple systems on completely different networks.

The details can be found here:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25446495/listening-for-udp-multicast-packets

and if anyone has any comments on it, please let me know.

I have also written the code in a couple of different ways (using C, etc.) and obtain the same results.

It seems to me that it might have something to do with the way the computers (OS X 10.9.4) are configured and are not, for some reason, dealing with the UDP packets correctly.

Wireshark can see them, but by the time the python code goes looking, it doesn't see them.

Are there any debugging techniques anyone can recommend that might allow me to see what is happening and determine what the problem is?
