Gamekit & peer to peer connections

Not sure if this is the correct list. Apologies if it isn't.

I am developing an application which will use peer to peer connections (2 or more. LAN and/or internet) for communication.

Gamekit has functionality which handles the connection discovery between clients.

But I may eventually move to non-mac systems and gamekit can't be used.

Are there any frameworks or libraries available which handle discovery between clients.

Would coding everything myself for discovery be "easy"? (I assume server packages are available for discovery. Just need to sniff one out).

Also, from what I have read, client to client discovery must be done via a 3rd party server (besides fiddling with the modem/router firewall and port forwarding settings which most users can't/won't do).

Is there any way around this?

TIA

Mark
