I know that there is a way. I know this because this plugin does it: http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/support/fcphd.asp
if you install it, and prepare the right project, you can use the plugin. It installs its own menu item, which when clicked, opens its own window.
Looking inside the plugin, there is a cocoa NIB file. So that means that this plugin was not programmed with the AE sdk. I believe that this was programmed by apple, using undocumented api's (FCP is carbon, and AE plugins are Codewarrior Carbon plugins I think).
You might be able to reverse-engineer this, or get a ADC incident to get access to the API's. We have not looked any further into this, so it would be interesting if someone found out a better way. Especially since codewarrior development will have to be phased out for intel support.
