This mostly happens, if you got a corrupt source file somewhere.
Try to make all sources offline and go thru step by step to reload.
What is the error message when importing the XML?

Hi,
working with FCP 5.0.4 I edited a few sequences in a project
All seemed to be OK but after I have exported a master tape
( fortunatly )
and rebooted FCP, it was unable to open this last sequence.
The project opens correctly but displays a warning like " not found
" ( "introuvable" in my french version )
If i try to open the sequence it displays this warning again and
then a second one like " memory full " ( " mémoire
saturée " in the french version ) Of course it isn't full ( 2.5 Go
for a 7 min sequence... )
Asking by Ctrl/click to relink media data, it reveals all links
look good and online.
All clips and previous sequences open and work fine except this one
This sequence was duplicated and renamed from previous and since it
was created, all
backups of the project are corrupted ( autosave and forced B.U.
files )
Suggested by Apple Enterprise Support, I have exported the project
in XML ( OK )
but it failled to re-import in FCP
What do you think about this ... is there any workarround ?
Thanks
