I just tried it (sorry for the delay) and what happens is that if you say no to both software and hardware, at any depth, we call your software path as if you had said yes to software. I think we basically just check the hardware flag, and if it's no, we assume you can do software, rather than actually checking the flag. Probably not what you expected. Please file a feature request and/or bug report.
Actually the more I think about this, I don’t really need Motion/FCP to deprecate to 8 bit RGB when it wants to pass me 32 bit rgb.
What I need is the docs to explain that I must support 32 bit rgb.... Then it’s clear what I need to do and I don’t have to reverse engineer what’s going on.
