FCP Real time Subtitling

Hello,

My name is Victor Rosa-Branco and I am a QA Engineer for SoftNI Corp.

We specialize in subtitling solutions for TV facilities around the globe.

We have developed a Final Cut Pro Plug-In which imports a Playlist

(xml) file that points to subtitle tiff images.

One of our clients needs to subtitle in real time; due to their workflow, they can't afford to render, so they must subtitle in real-time while exporting to tape.

They capture a clip in DVCPRO 50, import subs through our Plug-In, and export via a DeckLink to tape.

They say they can only do 580 subs in real-time, and they have over 1500 to do for one program.

They have maxed out their still cache (FCP gives them a memory allocation error when they go over 31% of the still images cache).

They are using a G5 PowerPC dual core 2.0 GHz processor with

4 MB of RAM.

My question is, is there any way they can do over 1500 subs in real-time without having to render?  If so, how?

What does FCP depend on for processing subtitles?

How can we work together (Apple and SoftNI) to make this work?

Our tiff images average about 200k each.  They have also tried another subtitling software (Belle Nuit) that apparently produces 50K tiff images, but with no luck either.

I have read that FCP needs about 1 -1.4 MB for each subtitle.

Why? Does FCP decompress to a full screen image each tiff file?

Thank you very much for any help that you can give us and feel free to contact me at any time.

Best regards,

Eng. Víctor Rosa-Branco
