That's an interesting idea, but won't I lose resolution in the
floats that way?
You shouldn't if you ask for 32-bit floats (as opposed to 16-bit half-
floats). In your call to glReadPixels (or similar methods), I think
you want to give a format of GL_FLOAT. Are you concerned that some
older cards use 24-bit floats? On those machines, even if you have a
software filter, I believe that we're getting the input image data
from the card anyway, so it would still be at that resolution
regardless of whether you tell the app to give you a texture or a
bitmap.
