setting keyframes?

We are making an FxPlug that can read in values from a text file and set parameter keyframes at different times. To do this, we just use the parameter set API and use SetValue at different times. In Motion we have to turn on auto keyframing and all is well, but in FCP we cannot seem to figure out a way to make it work at all. No keyframes are being set.
Is there some good way to do this in FCP that we're missing?
