I didn't realize that the Animation codec was only 8 bit.
It's a pity that these details are not listed in a reference table
somewhere.
Good point about color space conversions, too.
I'd thought about 4:4:4 vs 4:2:2.
Also, about the bit depth of the codecs that listed bit depth in their
name ...
I hadn't realized though that the bit depth of the codecs which don't
list
their bit depth in their names can be somewhat Trojan.
My mind is now reeling back to all the times that
I've unwittingly used the Animation codec and probably shouldn't have.
I haven't heard of "Ice floe". Are those newsletters still around
somewhere?

There's also "None" and a quite a few with "Uncompressed" in their
name as well (if you regard 4:2:2 as not lossy). Gets complicated by
your initial colourspace: Animation and None are 8-bit RGB, so any
other kind of image in will still experience some loss. I think
"Component Video" is uncompressed 4:2:2 YUV, if it's still around.
Some of the old QuickTime "Ice floe" newsletters would cover the
older codecs in some detail ...
