I've got FCE 4.0.1 installed side-by-side with FCP 7.0 and it seems to work fine.  I don't use FCE much though so there may be some hidden gotchas.

Good question. I suspect FCP 6 and FCE 6 (or whatever the equivalent release was) should work together, but I'll see if someone can verify that for me.
