Lu,
Motion always generates premultiplied alpha. You can't change that.
However, doesn't Avid have a popup somewhere to set the interpretation
of the alpha? It seems like most good editing apps do. If not, you
could also see if there's an "unmult" plugin available somewhere.
There used to be a free one for After Effects, but I don't know about
Avid. This sounds like an issue on the Avid side that it's not letting
you set the interpretation on the fly.

Hi,
I'm hoping this message reaches someone who knows the ins and outs of
QT/ProKit, and how Motion's ".motn" files are interpreted when used as
media files:
Let me explain --
I am using Motion with Avid Media Composer.
From Motion, it is possible to choose the Alpha type (Pre-multiplied
or Not) when rendering, render to an Avid codec, and then import to
Avid, but it involves several steps and is therefore slow.
My problem is that although when rendering out of Motion, , when you
choose to import a ".motn" file via Quicktime you get only
Premultiplied Black.
It is also possible to drag a ".motn" file directly to an Avid bin
however (similar to how one can do in FCP) and allow Avid to import
the file to disk, via On-the-fly-rendering -- courtesy of Quicktime;
but in this case the alpha always comes through as Pre-multiplied
Black. This is no good in Media Composer (MC only understands Straight
alphas, and so whatever you import this way has a black halo around
it).
I may be wrong, but the only reason I can see for this is that
QuickTime's default parsing of Motion projects is to assume alpha
should be premult-black...and my question is whether there's a way to
change this, so that these files will render in to the Avid with
straight alphas?
I'm hoping against hope, that there's a tweak, like "defaults write
com.apple...." where I can change this parameter in QT or ProKit or
whatever is responsible for this parsing
Thanks!
