This can't be stated enough. And on top of that, plugins should allow the user to do things that at first might not appear to make sense. For example, yesterday Brian mentioned having a plugin that generates a realistic explosion, and needing to be able to set the duration of the generator. But users wouldn't want that. They might intentionally want to render only a few frames of it, even if it cuts off the end of the explosion. Or they might want to render extra so they can match up the output with something else, even if the extra frames will be all black with zero alpha. And of course, they'd probably want to be able to render slow-motion explosions for special effects. Or maybe they want something really fast to simulate stronger gravity. Or whatever else an artist rather than a developer might think of.
If you can do things in a way which doesn't limit the user, that's a much better way to do them. Obviously there are practical limits on memory, rendering time, etc. But the fewer of those that get in the user's way, the better.
