I second that request. I ended up writing some not-very-elegant QuickTime code to determine the codec from the media file. FCP has the info so it would be great if it were available more conveniently.

Hi Gregory!
we don't store it for clips since it can be read out of clips while it can't be read out of sequences. Sounds like you'd like to request that it be there in clips?

I'm trying to access a clip's codec in the XML to get the equivalent of the "Compressor" column in Final Cut Pro's Browser window. In the XML specs there is mention of the <codec> element, which is a child of the <samplecharacteristics> element. This sounds like what I want.
However none of the clips in the bins have a <codec> element. A sequence does, but the clips in the sequence do not.
Am I missing something?
