Whatever its version number says, this is very much a 1.0 release of a brand new product (iMovie Pro) rather than a 10.0 release of Final Cut Pro. I don't think that's any reason to throw all our toys out the pram. It's an entirely new, much more modern code base that could augur well for an exciting future. Apple have made it clear they want to concentrate on the core editing functionality and not be responsible for lots of esoteric specialised functionality round the edges that are only required by a very small number of high end users and that they would rather see third party developers filling that gap. This is a tremendous opportunity therefore, but only if the hooks are there to allow third party developers to integrate with Final Cut and implement the missing functionality. What you should all be doing therefore is presenting cogent business cases to Apple arguing for them to open up FCX (via XML, FxPlug, AppleEvents, documenting the project file format, or whateer) and why that is in their (Apple's) interest, via DTS or this forum or any contacts you may have at Apple. In the meantime, FCP 7 hasn't gone away. There are still millions of users and tens of millions of FCP 7 projects which people are still working on and need help with, and Apple will probably still sell you copies of FCP 7 if you ask them nicely enough. View this initial release as a public beta if you like, for people to play with the new interface and get familiar with its capabilities while still keeping FCP 7 for bread and butter projects, and who knows, in 6 months' time there might by a FCPX 1.5 release that really blows everyone's mind away.

Apple has chosen to throw away a multi billion dollar ecosystem that has made FCS the powerhouse product that it is, today. I sincerely hope that the person in charge of ProApps figures this out. Also, I can't comment on Lion technology specifically, but I will comment on my products. Glue Tools products will not supported on future Apple OS's. This is not due to any choice that I made. This is disheartening, to say the least.

Senior Apple staff have insisted that FCPX and related apps are "Professional" and that the Professional's will be able to continue with the new product. Senior Apple people have also insisted that there isn't a real importance for third party codec support, either. They are considering future support at sometime in the nebulous future. Perhaps their take on the Advertising, Television and Feature Film industry is correct. Perhaps the whole world needs to use ProRes and iPads... and nothing else. But then perhaps the sales (as of yesterday) of my entire product line say something different.

For the time being, I will evaluate whats left of the future of the Final Cut Marketplace. (ie: the crater where FCS and QuickTime used to be..) I believe the best thing for me to do, is to sit back from the Apple dominated post production market and wait to see where consumers, indies and studios go with their money. I know of some larger facilities that are in the process of switching from FCS to Adobe premiere, for instance. Its not a reflection of the entire industry, certainly, but it is definitely a harbinger of change.

Lastly, due to the American "Sarbanes/Oxley" law, Apple can not add new functionality to a product, without charging for the update. This appears to mean that we are stuck with this steaming mess for at least 2 years. Very likely longer.

Long live Apple.

When we asked months ago what the support for 3rd party plugins would be and the answer we got was "We can't say", that didn't bode well.

The implication was either no support or radically different support. But they could have said something... I only see marginal benefit to Apple from saying - like consumers wouldn't know the bad news until the last minute that all their plugins would no longer work? However, I see huge hurt in not telling us. We could have prepared or at least started to prepare...

I suppose they can do what they want. It's Apple's sandbox, we just play in it.

Hi Bob and list,

I normally lurk here as my work on the Pro developer side of Final Cut and Logic is rather "in house" at the moment, but I do have to agree with you on this one, Bob. When you consider the existing rich world of Final Cut plugins and the level of support that the FCP developer community provides for Apple pro apps, it's quite disheartening to find out after the fact that the work we're all doing has just been shot to pieces and we all received no warning through access to beta versions - or at least access to the new APIs - before hand.

If I were Darrin, I'd take a few days off right about now as well as I suspect the list content is going to become quite heated.

I have to say,

It is pretty crappy that most of us long time only find out today, if our long development efforts are supported.

I just found out that *NONE* of my stuff works.

I am resisting the urge to say some choice comments right now. But I will save them for a public position email

to the public.

It seems as though marketing at apple knows best.

No problem Darrin - we've got FxPlug 2 to browse through in the meantime, plus FCP X.

Thanks

Hey FxPlug Developers,

I'm going to be out of the office for a couple days, so I'll be unable to answer questions Tuesday and Wednesday. I'll be back on Thursday.
