I'm afraid I know what the answer is going to be, but here goes: Is there any way to do the XML import/export programmatically via Apple Events, AppleScript, ... someone even reportedly found hints of a Python interface?  The Apple Events in FCP 7 were basic, but enough to make for a pretty smooth user experience.
