Thanks Greg. What I've done for now is set the src attribute of the asset tag to point to the files inside the existing Event folder (not the original files which are on a mounted hard drive), and then inside my FCP X prefs, make sure the "Copy files to Final Cut Events folder" box is unchecked. This then creates aliases to the media.
Still seems like it should work in some more direct way by referencing uid of media or project ref, but this will do for now.

Updating an existing Event isn't possible right now (not for lack of asking...)

<asset> is the right tag to use - it has the src attribute which has the file path to the media file. What happens if you select the drive with the media in the Event library before import? I've not seen FCPX duplicate source media before...
