Upgrade and Migration
If you are updating from 2.1.1 to 2.2 on an Intel machine running 10.5.8, this is a very straightforward release. Any other path can be tricky, and I'm sure we'll see many of you combining this update with an OS upgrade and/or hardware migration. Here are some key resources:
Important: the KBase is just a summary. It refers to the Migration guides, which provide details for each step.
One of the trickiest points is that you may not have installation media that works for your particular upgrade or migration scenario. That is why we are posting the Install Discs noted above. These disc images do not include a serial number, so you will use the serial number that came with their boxed version.
Example 1: Customer has Xsan 2.0 box and buys a new Mac Pro to replace an existing PPC machine on his SAN. The Mac Pro ships with Snow Leopard. The Xsan 2.0 installer will not run on SnowLeopard. Customer downloads the
Xsan 2.2 Install Disc and installs it on the Mac Pro, using the serial number from the 2.0 box (which was previously used on the PPC machine the Mac Pro replaces.)
Example 2: Customer has an Xsan 1.4.2 SAN on Tiger (Intel) and buys Snow Leopard and Xsan 2.2. The in-place upgrade path requires installing Leopard and Xsan 2.0 as intermediate steps. The customer downloads the
Xsan 2.0 Install Disc and uses the serial number from the new 2.2 box. If the customer does not have Leopard media, and/or Leopard Sever serial number in order to make this transition, they should contact AppleCare. These cases should be rare, since the hardware that can run both Tiger and Snow Leopard is limited.
