Most of you, at one time or another, have probably heard me recommend InstaDMG if you are wanting to get away from monolithic images (images that only work for one family or specific model of hardware). I thought I'd share some steps since it's greatly simplified my approach, and helps get other users up and running quickly. Even if Terminal.app is a place you don't visit often, feel free to copy/paste.
--- These three commands will get anybody a usable, never-booted 10.6.2 image in under 2 hours. At the command line, type the following commands. Be sure to NOT include my commentary in parentheses. svn checkout http://instadmg.googlecode.com/svn/trunk instadmg (downloads the app and puts it in current user's home directory)
*** Before second step, put a 10.6 install DVD into the drive of the computer you're running these commands on *** sudo ./instadmg/AddOns/InstaUp2Date/importDisk.py --automatic --legacy (if a 10.6 install DVD is in the drive, it will cook an image of it and put it in the right place) sudo ./instadmg/AddOns/InstaUp2Date/instaUp2Date 10.6_vanilla --process (will build an updated 10.6.2 image as of Feb. 15, 2010 that is between 4GB and 5GB) ---
I've been able to strip down my base image to 3.24GB because I use an InstallerChoices file. I attached mine, which cuts out additional languages, printers, X11, QT7 and Rosetta, essentially creating a minimal install for testing and the smallest footprint possible. This can be modified or left alone, and goes in the same folder as the Base OS install image of your 10.6 DVD.

Hope this helps! Now that Casper Imaging is $500 with no annual or per-client fees, I am recommending it wholeheartedly for those in education. As you can see below, it provides a GUI for what InstaDMG does. Once you get it lined up and in the right priority order, you hit the compile button. Nice and simple.
