Yesterday Apple announced a new Mac Developer Program that replaces the Apple Developer Connection. This new program provides access to pre-release software, technical support, Apple Developer Forums, and a wealth of additional tools and resources for only $99 per year. This is a significant reduction in price, formerly you would have needed a Select ($499) or Premiere ($3,499) membership to get access to all of these resources. Note that there is still a "free" membership that gives you access to basic Dev center resources and the Developer Tools. Also note that enrolling in the Mac Developer Program is now much like enrolling in the iPhone Developer Program -- you will need to provide Apple with information about your "business" (or the University, in most cases) for identity verification. This holds only if you choose to enroll on behalf of a company. There is an individual enrollment plan that requires only a credit card for identity verification.
I've pasted below an overview of each feature of the Mac Developer Program.
Pre-Release Software Receiving pre-release Mac OS X software is an exclusive benefit for all Mac Developer Program members and allows developers to begin incorporating the latest technologies into their development process, test for compatibility, and report bugs. Stay Up-to-Date with the Latest Software The Apple Developer Seed Update email is sent to all Mac Developer Program members notifying them new, pre-release software is available including Mac OS, development tools, SDKs, and more. Bug Reporting Apple appreciates the efforts of our developers who help us discover and isolate bugs within our products. During the testing of pre-release software, we encourage you to submit bug reports and enhancement requests on Apple products and track these submissions using the Apple Bug Reporter.
Technical Support The Apple Developer Technical Support (DTS) team is made up of highly qualified engineers with development expertise in key Apple technologies. Whether you need direct one-on-one support troubleshooting issues, assistance to accelerate a project, or guidance to the right documentation and sample code, Apple engineers are ready to help you.
Practical, Code-Level Technical Support Tailored to Your Development Needs When you request Technical Support, you’ll be assigned an engineer with subject matter expertise for your specific issue that can help you troubleshoot your code, offer direction to additional technical resources, or provide workarounds that will fastrack your development. The Mac Developer Program includes two Technical Support Incidents per membership year.
Apple Developer Forums The Apple Developer Forums provide a collaborative environment to post development topics and questions for an open discussion with Mac developers and Apple engineers. Benefits and Features of the Developer Forums: • Easily find Mac OS X development topics and discussions
• Create posts using a rich-text editor optimized for code & screen shots
• Full text search within a growing base of development threads and developers
• Get instant notifications for your favorite topics, threads, and developers
• Profiles allow you to post anonymously or with your real name and location
• Uniquely identify posts from Apple participants and moderators
Development Videos Watch a wealth of technical content and insight from Apple engineers and experts through iTunes. Download the videos from iTunes and take them with you on your Mac, iPod, or iPhone to watch anytime, anywhere. Mac Developer Program members can access a range of videos on developing for Mac OS X, including: • Essential Videos -- Apple engineers discuss how to develop with the revolutionary technologies in Mac OS X to create feature-rich, engaging, and well designed applications. • Foundation Videos -- This collection of videos from past Apple Worldwide Developers Conferences cover a range of fundamental concepts for developing with Mac OS X, including application technologies, graphics & media, development tools, and OS foundations.
Developers who currently have an active ADC Membership (Premier, Select, or Student) will maintain full access to their ADC Membership benefits and services until their current ADC Membership expires.
