One problem will be that all the client software would have to be loaded on the server to set preferences in WorkGroup Manager. That's why it is better to do it on a client using the admin tools there. If you don't have software that will be a problem when installed on the server then you should be OK.

Or, use admin tools from any mac on your network (just connect
to the desired server).

Hi Joel,
You can certainly use the admin tools (Server Admin,
Workgroup Manager) locally on a Mac OS X Server.
Does that answer your question?

Ok,
short story long.
Our
institution is moving into the area of mac labs. We are moving to dual
directory setup with ad and od. We have multiple sites and a couple are getting
a mac lab. We will have a mac mini at each of those sites as a image server and
master replication so the local tech can administer those labs as far as
sharepoints, security settings, user accounts nested from ad.
My
question and problem is down to the root of today?s problems (philosophical
question for another time) is budget. I have a working knowledge of OD from
10.3 up to 10.5 OD services. I have always had a client machine that used to
remote manage the clients using admin tools. My major question is this, is it a
hard fact that in order to do this properly it MUST be done from a client
machine using admin tools to setup a client preferences ect and if so I need
documentation showing this so I can present it to the budget committee as
justification of having another tech mac mini for those sites that are managing
a dual boot Macintosh lab? I know that I can give instructional
assistance with using a netboot tech client with the proper tools; however when
major updates are needed, then the netboot image must be rebuilt with those
updates to keep in sync with clients.
Short
version, can I do all server management from the server only and if not why?
Thanks.
