Do any of the legacy machines "see" the network? Can you select available networks but get a subsequent error?
The airport base stations automatically create two networks: 2.4 GHz for b/g/n and a 5 GHz for a/n. If you have a mixed environment, it's best to give each of these unique names and instruct users of legacy machines to use the named 2.4 GHz network ("HeyOlderMachinesOnly" or some such...).
I assume you have security set up on the base stations? WPA? WPA2? Some older machines (Mac and PC) will not connect unless it's WEP.
PC's can be finicky - sometimes you need the WEP equivalent password to connect and you can generate that via the Airport Utility.
Just a few ideas.
