Rockies list,
Yesterday was a fun day, and there was new technologies shown in the WWDC keynote that we've been wanting in Mac OS X and iOS for quite some time. All-in-all, good stuff, in my opinion. Now that the dust has settled a bit, we come to the moment in Apple timetables where we often have many more questions than answers. In the past, we've had product announcements before they shipped, only to usher in a lot of questions with very little released information to lean on. We're definitely there again.
This list spends a lot of time discussing imaging, deployment, management, integration, workflows, etc. when it comes to Mac OS X and iOS both. Now that Lion and iOS 5 has been shown, there's a lot of things that are going to change about our practices for imaging, deployment, etc of both of those platforms. Maybe not the majority of how you do your work will change, but there will be tweaks and adjustments that will require some serious planning and consideration on your part. I'm sure you knew that already.
Here's what we do know right now.
1. Lion requires 2GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo or higher processor. In summary, that is basically:
- iMac Late 2006 or newer
- Mac Mini Mid 2007 or newer
- MacBook Late 2006 or newer
- MacBook Pro Late 2006 or newer
- All MacBook Airs
- All Mac Pros
- All Intel Xserves
This KBase outlines the details: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159
2. Lion ships in July
3. Lion is available only in the Mac App Store
4. Lion requires 10.6.6 and the Mac App Store for the installation to occur.
5. iOS 5 will ship this fall (technically, somewhere between Aug. 8 and Nov. 7, according to the calendar)
6. iOS 5 will run on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch (3rd and 4th Generation) and all iPads
7. iOS 5, with AirPlay-based video mirroring, opens a whole new world of possibilities
8. iCloud could very well simplify a lot of things, and create a new focus on your bandwidth
-----
Here's a sample of what we really need to know, and what we're hearing from you that you need to know as well.
Lion:
1. With no installation media, how do AELP (Apple Education Licensing Program) customers get their 10.7 software? Redeem codes?
2. With Lion Server being a $50 purchase in the Mac App Store, how will AELP customers acquire new licenses?
3. If I have a Mac running 10.5 and I don't have the Mac App Store on it, will I first have to upgrade 10.6 and then to 10.7?
4. I see that Apple is still selling Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. For how much longer will that be available for purchase?
iOS 5:
1. Are there new management features for IT in iOS 5?
2. Tons more here, too numerous to list :-)
In the past, we've posted FAQ and procedural sites for our education customers well before the product ships. Please note that while this is all exciting and people really need to know how their workflows are going to change, this product won't ship tomorrow...it ships in July. Before it ships in July, we'll have the information we need to make the best decisions possible. It's also safe to say that Mike, Frank and I are definitely going to have enough material to host a seminar or two :-)
Stay tuned, thanks for your patience, and we'll post information here as soon as we have it.
Thanks!
Corey
