It is all about the process order. When you turn on Find My IPad, it locks the device activation to the Apple ID you used for iCloud. If you then plug into Configurator, the device cannot be activated. You can use Find My IPad if you turn it on After you supervise it with Configurator.

Whatever you do, read this if you are using Configurator:
If you only use one account (individual model) on all your iPads, Find my iPad will work with dozens of devices (we did it last year, even though you aren't supposed to). However, when you go to hook your iPads up to Configurator with this turned on, you cannot sync your iPads. You then have to manually go in and turn off Find my iPad before you can sync them, on every single device. This cost me several hours of wasted class time earlier this year.
Not sure of the logic behind this. We spend countless dollars on their products and we can't use this feature?

Hello everyone.
What product would you recommend for helping you locate your iPads if they ever get stolen or lost? Do you all use "Find my Phone," whatever is offered with your MDM, or a combination of both?
Thank you.

For devices assigned to a single user, we use both. If the device is shared, then we only use the MDM. Neither is very reliable as the devices need to be connected to wireless and most of the time the location is based on IP address rather than GPS location. Phones are easier to find because their location is usually based on GPS or cell tower triangulation both of which are more accurate.
