I have experience with the Hitachi short throw projectors. They work well for interactive boards, but I also have one in a conference room that projects onto the wall. It sits on a cart with a computer, and the cart is up next to the wall.
As for your use in a gymnasium, the only way to know for sure if it will work there (not be washed out) is to actually try one. I know our local Troxell rep will come to your school and demo one if he can get his hands on one.

We are looking at a few Epson Powerlite projectors that are Ultra Short Throw; meaning they mount to the wall and only stick out from the wall by a foot or two but can still project a large image on the wall. If you have had any experience with these (good
or bad) please let us know. We are looking to use them in a few classrooms as well as a gymnasium.
