Hi Kelly,
In terms of printing from an iPad, you have a few options. First up is AirPrint, which like Airplay, facilitates automatic discovery and direct communication between the printer and iPad using Bonjour.
Next up is just a network connected printer and an app with a print feature. There is noting special about the iPad in terms of printing to a networked printer, you just need an app that supports printing. I’ve seen folks use this one:
Finally, you might want to get as granular as a print server option, like PaperCut:
I don’t have a 3D printer but I think you will find MakerBot to be among the most affordable, not to mention one of the best user communities out there for 3D printing:
