Before installing updates to tools like iTunes, Apple Configurator or Profile Manager (via Server for Mavericks), please make sure you have a full backup of your system and if possible have a test environment to work with the upgrade prior to installing in production.

iOS 8 Details:
On September 17 Apple will be releasing iOS 8. iOS 8 provides big updates to apps your students and staff use everyday, provides new ways to share and show work, and provides new management features. Below is a short list of items of interest.
• New power for developers including 4000 new API’s to enable amazing features and capabilities.
• Better document workflows including support for AirDrop between iPad and Mac and the introduction of iCloud Drive.
• Easier AirPlay setup allowing anyone in the class to present or share their work, even if they are not on the network or if the Apple TV is on a different network.
• Redesigned Spotlight that goes beyond your device to find what you’re looking for. Spotlight now intelligently considers things like context and location providing a rich set of search results.
• Support for third-party software keyboards allowing for new and personalize input methods.
• New ways to manage books and PDF’s.
• Ability to remotely set the device name.
• New restrictions preventing a user from adding their own restrictions or erasing their device.
• New queries letting administrators see the last time a device was backed up to iCloud
• Redesigned MDM enrollment details making it easier for user to understand policies and setting that are managed.

iOS 8 is a free update and can be installed over-the-air or by connecting the device to a computer and using Apple Configurator or iTunes.
