Hi All,
This week’s Apple Admins was a lot of fun for me, as I hope it was for you.
It’s always great to see the community come together, and I sincerely
appreciate your time, attention, and tough questions! I’d love to hear your
feedback and if you want to participate or present next time around, let me
know.
I highly recommend you check out the recording of session 304 from this year’s
WWDC, "What's New in Device Configuration, Deployment, and Management”:
https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2017/304/
At the above link you will find the session’s video recording, presentation
slides, and transcript which you can use to click through into the video
itself. This session is the best public look forward at the management
capabilities of iOS 11, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Mobile Device Management, and
Apple School Manager.
A couple of questions that came up at the end of the Apple Admins meeting
pertained to Apple Classroom 2.1. From watching the video above, we know of new
restrictions which allow device admins to force unprompted screen observation
and device control on supervised devices
(https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2017/304/?time=2215). A question
was asked: is there is a management capability to prevent users from removing
unmanaged classes once they have added them? Today the answer is no. Unmanaged
classes are an opt in (and thus) opt out process. If you need to ensure classes
are assigned to a device, use managed classes provided by your supporting MDM's
Education Configuration Profile.
Another question was asked about Classroom 2.1’s student activity view, which
provides an overview of what apps students used during class and what documents
and URLs were shared
(https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2017/304/?time=3138). The question
was, can the information that is available in the instructor’s Classroom app
activity view be exported? The answer is not today. Instructors can screenshot
this info to retain it after viewing.
A question was also asked about upcoming Volume Purchase Program enhancements
(https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2017/304/?time=1630). I think the
video provides the most clarity on this topic, so please check it out and
followup with me for additional details.
I also want to plug for Apple’s Developer Program which gives you access to new
tools like Classroom 2.1, Apple Configurator 2.5 today. Please sign up and dial
in your support development cycle! https://developer.apple.com
Finally, if you have not seen our Edu IT homepage recently, check it out for
ton of other resources: https://www.apple.com/education/it/
Thank you,
-Mike
