Hi All,
Most of the K-12 schools in Colorado have officially put the 2018-2019 school
year behind them, which means it’s time for summer IT work! I know lots of you
are upgrading systems, cleaning up collected devices, and installing new
hardware.
I’ve spoken to many of you about your summer Apple work, and I feel like there
has never been a better time to deploy Apple solutions in K12. Here are a few
common items that folks are taking care of this summer:
- Apple School Manager Upgrades. In December, we will close deploy.apple.com
<http://deploy.apple.com/> and volume.itunes.apple.com
<http://volume.itunes.apple.com/>. This means you must be using
school.apple.com <http://school.apple.com/> with an upgrade to Apps and Books
in ASM. Let me know if you are still using deploy.apple.com
<http://deploy.apple.com/> or volume.itunes.apple.com
<http://volume.itunes.apple.com/>.
- Federated Authentication with Apple School Manager and Microsoft Azure AD. If
you are using AD Connect or Azure AD, let’s talk about enabling Federated
Authentication in ASM.
- Personal Apple IDs in a school domain. If your school permits the use of
personal Apple ID, it is smart to advise users not to use a school email
address. If your users have Apple IDs, advise them to change it to a personal
email account, not a school owned account.
- MDM setup. Some of you are getting a new MDM solution or setting up MDM for
the first time, which is an opportunity to make some smart architecture
decisions. Let’s talk about group policy and app scoping techniques.
- macOS upgrades. Are your existing lab and teacher Macs up to date? If the
device is running 10.13 or 10.14, and is enrolled in MDM, you can perform an
in-place upgrade remotely. I’ve seen some great remote-scripted solutions using
the command line tool startosinstall. There are also interesting third party
options like Mac Deploy Stick to check out:

If you are working on any of these things, I’d love to chat about it.
Talk to you soon, thanks!
