Hi Washington State EDU.
I hope this note finds you well.
This past week brought some new and important updates that I wanted to share. Here are some details.
OS X 10.11 El Capitan (free)
On Wednesday September 30 Apple released OS X 10.11 El Capitan. El Capitan comes with some important updates and features including:
* Split View
* Streamlined Mission Control
* Redesigned Spotlight
* Mail Improvements
* Powerful new Notes app
* Enhancements to Safari
* Mass transit support in Maps
* Metal (core graphics technology)
* System optimization and performance improvements
Please see the below links for more information and to download OS X El Capitan.

* Download<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-el-capitan/id1018109117?mt=12> (Link to the Mac App Store)
There are two important updates to OS X El Capitan I would like to highlight. These items fall outside the standard features list but are very important for technical departments.
* App Transport Security (ATS) - enforces best practices in the secure connections between an app and its back end. ATS is on by default in iOS 9 and OS X 10.11. This is mainly a security measure for App developers and how the app communicates with the back end systems. ATS enforces a HTTPS connection and enforces communication through higher level API’s to use TLS version 1.2 with forward secrecy.
* System Integrity Protection (SIP) - A new security policy that applies to every running process, including privileged code and code that runs out of the sandbox. The policy extends additional protections to components on disk and at run-time, only allowing system binaries to be modified by the system installer and software updates. Code injection and runtime attachments to system binaries are no longer permitted.
Apple Configurator 2
Apple Configurator 2.0 is a major new release of Apple Configurator, available as a free download from the Mac App Store. Apple Configurator 2.0 requires OS X El Capitan and iTunes 12.2 or later, and it works with iOS devices using iOS 7 and later. Note that Apple Configurator will not be listed as an update to Apple Configurator 1.0 as this is a completely new app.
What's new in Configurator 2.0
* New interface
Apple Configurator 2 features a new design that allows you to select and perform an action on a single device, or many devices at the same time. You can update software, install apps and configuration profiles, rename and change wallpaper on devices, export device information and documents, and much more. You can also inspect any device to see details like serial number and hardware addresses, which apps and profiles are installed, and each device's console log.
* Apple Deployment Programs
Apple Configurator 2 works with the Device Enrollment Program (DEP) to automate Mobile Device Management (MDM) enrollment. It also works with the Volume Purchase Program (VPP) by assigning managed licenses apps to devices.
* Blueprint
You can create a Blueprint to streamline your work in Apple Configurator 2. Each Blueprint is a template device where you can add configuration profiles and apps, and perform actions just like you would to a connected physical device. Then use your Blueprint to apply the configuration to new devices with a single click. You can also automate Configurator 2 using a new command-line tool, AppleScript scripting library, or Automator Actions.
* iCloud Drive
Support for iCloud Drive enables you to keep your configuration profiles and other settings consistent across multiple Configurator stations.
* Additional features
Configurator 2.0 also provides support for managing the following new features in iOS 9.
• Device-based app assignment
• New IKEv2 VPN options
Restrictions:
• Allow trusting new enterprise app authors
• Allow screenshots and screen recordings
• Treat AirDrop as unmanaged destination
Restrictions (Supervised only):
• Allow modifying device name
• Allow modifying wallpaper
• Allow modifying passcode
• Allow automatic app downloads
• Allow pairing with Apple Watch
• Allow News
• Allow keyboard shortcuts

iOS 9.0.2
This update contains bug fixes and improvements including:
• Fixes an issue with the setting to turn on or off app cellular data usage
• Resolves an issue that prevented iMessage activation for some users
• Resolves an issue where an iCloud Backup could be interrupted after starting a manual backup
• Fixes an issue where the screen could incorrectly rotate when receiving notifications
• Improves the stability of Podcasts

VPP Store Updates
The VPP Store was updated last week to support information on if an App supports device based app assignment. In the information page on an app, the far left hand pane lists the price, category, version, etc. Just above Customer Ratings the information page will list “Device-Assignable” if the app supports Device Based App Assignment.
App Development and Education
Coinciding with the release of iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan is Xcode 7.0 (development application) and Swift 2.0 (programming language). With Xcode 7, everyone can install and run their apps on their iOS device for free, opening the door to Application Development options for students 13 and over.
The following technologies make this possible:
Swift 2 - Swift is a powerful and intuitive programming language for iOS, OS X, watchOS and tvOS. Its syntax is concise yet expressive, and the language continues to evolve with more features that make it safer and easier to use.
Playgrounds - With Swift Playgrounds, you can author gorgeous documentation, easy to follow experiments, and interactive educational content. Add playgrounds to your Xcode project to show how to use an API or demonstrate how you solved a problem.
Xcode 7 - The Xcode developer tools include everything you need to create amazing apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. And now with Xcode 7, it's easier for everyone to be a programmer and build apps that run directly on their Apple devices.

As always, please let me know if there are any questions or if you’d like to discuss these updates in more detail.
