Hi Washington State Educators.
My name is Marc Melkonian and I’m a K-12 Systems Engineer with Apple. I am a pre-sales resource for all Washington State schools.
First, let me introduce the EDU-WA mailing list. This list is designed to provided a method to share information with Washington State Educators and supporting staff. This list can support announcements as well as discussions. The list email address is email@hidden<mailto:email@hidden>.
As a member of this list, you can self subscribe and unsubscribe (although I’d hate to see you go).
Please note my goal in this list is for sharing information (good and bad) and helping Apple customers keep up to date with product announcements and changes.
Now that formal introductions are complete, I’d like to provide some announcements.
iOS 9
Tomorrow Apple will release iOS 9. This will be a free update for iPad 2 and later devices.
Below please find a few important notes about the iOS 9 upgrade process.
* iOS 9 will require much less free space than iOS 8. On average, please expect users will need 1.3GB of free space to upgrade.
* Once a device is upgraded to iOS 9, it can not be downgraded to iOS 8.x
* Apple provides no supported option to prevent users from upgrading to iOS 9
* Caching Server should help reduce load on the network, allowing for iOS 9 installs to be served from the Caching Server and not the being pulled from the Internet.

iOS 9 brings some very important updates and improvements around deployment and management, namely device based app assignment.
* Ability to deploy iOS apps to devices when the App Store is disabled via a Configuration Profile restriction
* Ability to assign, install and revoke a Volume Purchased app directly to a device without requiring an Apple ID on the device
* Use an MDM to trigger an iPad install App updates on a device
* Restrict users from changing a device name, or device wall paper.
* Restrict users from trusting a Enterprise Developer Profile for 3rd party apps (method to bypass the App store and various app restrictions)
For more information please visit http://www.apple.com/education/it/ & https://www.apple.com/ipad/business/ios/
**Please note that some of the new management features may require an update to the Mobile Device Management server. MDM vendors are fast at work on adding support for new iOS 9 features. Please check with your vendor for an update.
Is your organization ready for iOS 9? Here is a good checklist for reference. https://www.apple.com/ipad/business/docs/iOS_9_Checklist_for_IT.pdf
DEP
A new software license agreement and program license agreement will be introduced in the Device Enrollment Program (DEP) deployment portal on Wednesday, after iOS 9 is released. DEP program Agents will be required to log into the deployment website to accept new terms and conditions before continuing to use the program.
For more information please see this support article: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT203063.
Later this month I will provide an second update on OS X El Capitan, Apple Configurator 2.0, Xcode 7.0, & Swift 2.0. To provide a little sneak peek please visit https://developer.apple.com/education/
I’d like to thank you for reading the note. I’d be more than happy to discuss any items via phone, email or meeting.
Thanks again,
