This then brings up a practical question, namely is session termination controlled only on the server side? What I need to do is keep a session open even if the client side terminates (accidenally, communications disconnect, etc.). How can I do this? will just extending the timeout period be sufficient?

Are you talking about a Java client application? I'm completely unfamiliar with that, so don't know.

If you are talking about an ordinary web browser application, then the client terminating wont' even be noticed by the server. The session stays existent until it times out, or until code you have written calls terminate() on the session.
