I think the crux of the confusion here is that nearly all of the
documents around speak of compatibility between versions of Mac OS X,
Java, Xcode and *WO Developer*. There is virtually no mention of
deployment, except for the paragraphs in
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107649 and
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=70037 which say:
"WebObjects 5.2.2 deployment now comes pre-installed on Panther Server
only. To install WebObjects 5.2.2. Deployment, install or upgrade to
Mac OS X 10.3 Server"
and
"This update is recommended only for WebObjects customers who want to
use Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), use JDK 1.4.1, or deploy their
applications on JBoss servers."
To me this could mean that this is the only way to purchase the
deployment on its own. I don't find any mention that 5.2.2 deployment
can't be installed on Jaguar to give compatibility with Java 1.4.1.
Note that the second quote gives Panther as one of the *possible*
reasons to upgrade.
Here's a thought. Does anyone have 5.2.1 installed on Jaguar that they
have run Software Update on to see if it wants to go to 5.2.2 (although
this is not a guaranteed result).
But alas, the confusion continues.
Ray.

The question is this.
Can I upgrade my development system to Panther, XCode, WO 5.2.2 while
deploying the built applications on Mac OS X 10.2.8?
A couple of respondents said they were doing this without finding any
problems.
One very knowledgeable poster said it would be asking for trouble.
I would strongly advise against developing your applications with
5.2.2. on Panther and then deploying them on 5.2.1 on Jagular. All
java frameworks in WebObjects 5.2.2, to name a few examples
JavaWebObjects.framework, JavaFoundation.framework,
JavaEOControl.framework, etc, are all compiled against Java Virtual
Machine ver. 1.4.1. Java frameworks in WebObjects 5.2.1 were compiled
with JVM 1.3.1. Do you think it'd work, if you compile your
applications with 1.4.1 and then run it on 1.3.1 ? The answer is NO.
You may ask "What if I change the default JVM to 1.4.1 on Mac OS X
Server 10.2.8 ? The answer is still NO. You may try it and you would
run into NoClassDefFoundError.
Here's the bit I didn't ask:
Would I have to install WO 5.2.2 deployment on the OS X 10.2.8
deployment machine? Maybe some respondents were assuming that I
meant this and others were not. Maybe it is not even possible to
install 5.2.2 on OS X 10.2.8.
The only legal way to get the WebObjects 5.2.2. Deployment is to
upgrade your OS to Panther Server.
